Public Awareness Press Release

Independent Living Partnership Ltd (ILP) have received a number of calls recently regarding companies contacting elderly and vulnerable people in Shropshire to sell items suitable for people with poor mobility or a disability.

There are some excellent companies who are genuine, but there are others who adopt unsavoury ways of selling to the public. These callers often imply they are working on behalf of social or health services or use a local organisations name in their introduction.

If you are cold called by a company wanting to arrange an appointment with you in your home to discuss products to help you be more independent please do the following:

  • Take the name of the company
  • Take the name of the person calling you
  • Take their telephone number and advise them that you will call them back
  • Contact ILP to see if the company is genuine, if we haven’t heard of them, we will research them.

If you make an appointment with them make sure you have someone else with you in the house.  Some companies will make arrangements with you and then not turn up.  They will rearrange with short notice, ILP believes this is an attempt to reduce availability of other people to join you.

Discussion with local police have informed ILP that it is not just equipment for elderly and disabled companies who use this type of selling technique, any commodity can be used as a screen.  Often a local company or organisation is used in the introduction to imply authenticity and develop (misguided) trust.

Local Police Officer, Andy Gardner agreed with the suggested actions outlined by ILP and added “If anything appears suspicious, call us on 0300 333 3000, we will be happy to investigate.”  He also added that Trading Standards (Public Protection) should be contacted to inform them of any potential suspicious selling techniques on 08454 040506.

If you feel you would benefit from equipment, contact ILP on 01743 210820, we will be able to show you a range of equipment which may be of assistance to you.  You will have the benefit of expert advice, the chance to try the product out to ensure safety and comfort, but most importantly, we will be able to assess your eligibility and you may be eligible for financial contribution in the form of a Direct Payment.
