Course Aims

  • To enable learners to understand their legal duties and responsibilities
  • To enable learners to understand risk factors associated with moving and handling of people
  • To enable learners to understand Principles of Effective Movement
  • To enable learners to have confidence in using a range of equipment and handling methods

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Understand legislation related to moving and handling of people
  • Understand and describe risk factors and demonstrate the Principles of Effective Movement
  • Use a range of handling methods to support clients
  • Use a range of equipment, including hoists and slings

 

Course content

  • Adopting a person-centred approach to consider the psycho-social impacts of assistive handling, positioning and hoisting
  • Types and consequences of injury
  • Principles of effective movement
  • legislation (responsibilities and duties) and risk assessment
  • Hoist anatomy and safe use of hoists
  • Safe use of a range of handling equipment

 

Practical demonstrations and practice including:

  • Range of practical activities using minimally assistive handling methods, aids and equipment
  • Safe use of mobile and ceiling track hoists, applying/removing a sling (seated and lying transfers)
  • Range of transfers and problem solving
