Course Aims

  • To have an understanding of the relevant legislation
  • Be aware of duties and responsibilities according to the legislation
  • To understand communication skills with disabled people
  • To increase communication skills with disabled people

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Understand current, relevant legislation including the Equality Act, Human Rights Act and the Care Act
  • Understand how we define disability, including stereotypes and attitudes both past and present
  • Identify some barriers to communication
  • Identify methods of communication for people who have sensory, physical cognitive disabilities
  • Identify physical and environmental barriers to equal access, and how these could be overcome

 

Course Content

  • Overview of current, relevant legislation
  • Exploring definitions and stereotypes of disability
  • Exploring barriers to communication and how these can affect individual's daily life
  • Exploring how we can overcome the barriers to promote effective communication
  • Practical demonstrations of methods of communication for people with hearing, sight, cognitive or physical disabilities
